Why Emerald City Reptiles Is Expanding Its Focus to Honduran Milk Snakes

If you've been following Emerald City Reptiles for a while, you know Ball Pythons are my passion.

For nearly ten years I've enjoyed everything about them—from learning proper husbandry and working with incredible genetics to helping new keepers choose the right animal for their family. Ball Pythons introduced me to an amazing community, and they continue to be one of my favorite species to work with.

So, let me start with this...

Ball Pythons aren't going anywhere.

They will always be a major part of Emerald City Reptiles.

But as I've grown as both a keeper and a breeder, I've also discovered another species that has steadily earned a permanent place in my collection: the Honduran Milk Snake.

This isn't a sudden change. It's something that's developed over the past several years, and I wanted to share why.

Experience Changes Perspective

One of the best parts about spending nearly a decade in this hobby is realizing that your opinions evolve.

When I first started, I was fascinated by Ball Python genetics. Like many breeders, I found myself producing animals that I personally loved. Thankfully, I eventually learned an important lesson: breeding isn't just about producing what you like—it's about understanding what makes a great long-term pet and providing healthy, well-started animals that owners can enjoy for years.

That shift in thinking has influenced everything I do today.

It's also one of the reasons I've become increasingly excited about Honduran Milk Snakes.

Why Honduran Milk Snakes?

The more time I've spent working with them, the more I've come to appreciate just how underrated they are.

They have vibrant natural colors without relying on complex genetic combinations.

They're active, curious, and often visible in their enclosure.

They're excellent feeders.

And perhaps one of the biggest differences...

They rarely go on hunger strikes.

Anyone who has kept Ball Pythons knows that feeding questions are among the most common concerns from new keepers.

"My snake skipped a meal."
"Should I be worried?"
"Why isn't it eating?"

Most experienced Ball Python keepers understand that seasonal fasting can be perfectly normal.

First-time owners, however, understandably panic.

Honduran Milk Snakes are different.

While every snake is an individual, they're generally enthusiastic feeders that make life a little less stressful for new keepers. That consistency can build confidence for someone just entering the reptile hobby.

This Isn't About One Species Being Better

I want to be very clear.

This isn't about saying Honduran Milk Snakes are "better" than Ball Pythons.

They're simply different.

Ball Pythons remain one of the best pet snakes available. Their calm temperament, manageable size, and incredible variety of morphs have made them the most popular pet snake in the world for good reason.

I still enjoy working with them just as much today as I did when I started.

But I've also come to realize that the best snake depends on the person.

Some keepers love a heavier-bodied snake that spends much of its time tucked away.

Others prefer a snake that's more active, eager to feed, and frequently out exploring its enclosure.

Neither choice is wrong.

My goal has always been to help people find the species that's the best fit—not simply the most popular one.

The Reality of the Market

Another factor is simply being honest about the reptile industry.

Ball Pythons have an incredible community of dedicated breeders producing amazing animals every year. The market is mature, competitive, and filled with outstanding people.

Honduran Milk Snakes, on the other hand, remain somewhat of a hidden gem.

They're not nearly as common, yet they make outstanding pets.

As a breeder, that makes them exciting—not because they're a shortcut or a trend, but because I genuinely enjoy working with them and believe they deserve more attention than they often receive.

For me, it's an opportunity to focus on a species I truly enjoy while introducing more people to an incredible colubrid that often flies under the radar.

Ball Pythons will always have a home at Emerald City Reptiles.

But Honduran Milk Snakes have earned one too.
